Laiquendi

Laiquendi Clan

House-Heads:
Taursir and Calriel

Restrictions: Silvan-only.

Visual distinction: Laiquendi are almost always dressed in green, and within Lorien their tunics are adorned with a mallorn leaf embroidered in gold thread.

Worldview: The Silvan Laiquendi of the 1st and 2nd Ages lived beyond the borders of Lorien, and so they have relations and friendships within all of the elven realms, and even some of the Dunadan enclaves. However, they still maintain a quiet distrust of Noldo elves in general, though not nearly the distrust that they will openly profess of Dwarves.

Foriegn Policy: Laiquendi take advantage of the pervasive reach of their kinship to try and remain well informed of the foreign affairs of other elf realms. Of course, Galadhrim Laiquendi love their home above almost all else, so they are not inclined to journey. Rather, to gather news of the world, they encourage their kin to come visit, especially those in nearby Amon Thranduil.

Average Member: Laiquendi are most concerned with song, dance and speech as opposed to careers within the military. In fact, it is rare that the song and verse champions at Lorien's many festivals would belong to any other House. Caring deeply for all living things, Laiquendi also make excellent healers, and their talent in speech makes them apt couriers or news finders as well.

History
The Laiquendi come from a group of Silvan elves that migrated to Beleriand in the late ages of the stars. They were granted the land of Ossiriand by the elves of Doriath.
After Melkor came, and the First Battle was fought, the Laiquendi King Denethor was slain. From then on, the Laiquendi would take no king and would make no cities, they lived in the forest and shot arrows from the trees.
When Beleriand was cover by the Sea, the Laiquendi had to migrate again. Some went to Mirkwood, some came to Lothlorien, some sailed to Valinor.

An extract from The Silmarillion (Ballentine's edition page 110, end of chapter "Of the Sindar".)

"... and Thingol was cut off from Cirdan at Eglarest. Therefore he called upon Denethor; and the Elves came in force from Region beyond Aros and from Ossiriand, and fought the first battle in the Wars in Beleriand. And the eastern host of the orcs was taken between the armies of the Eldar, north of the Andram and midway between the Aros and Gelion, and there they were utterly defeated, and those that fled north from the great slaughter were waylid by the axes of the Naugrim that issued from Mount Dolmed; few indeed returned to Angband.

But the victory of the Elves was dear-bought. For those of Ossiriand were light-armed, and no match for the Orcs, who were shod with iron and iron-shielded and bore great spears with broad blades; and Denethor was cut off and surrouded upon the hill of Amon Ereb. There he fell and all his nearest kin about him, before the host of Thingol could come to his aid. Bitterly though his fall was avenged, when Thingol came upon the rear of the Orcs and slew them in heaps, his people lamented him ever after and took no king again. After the battle some returned to Ossiriand, and their tidings filled the remnant of their people with great fear, so that thereafter they came never forth in open war, but kept themselves by wariness and secrecy; and they were called the Laiquendi, the Green-elves, because of their raiment of the colour of leaves"
